First thing you need to understand about leoric is that he has blinking or teleporting abilities which can easily backstab you even if you are running away from him. To counter leoric's teleporting ability is to use any kind of teleporting skills like barb's leap. Make sure to reserve leap everytime you plan to attack him or counter attack him. Cleaving is important in order for you to get free drop potions from skeletons minions which is essential for your survival. Make sure everytime you attack leoric, your potion is fully cooldown incase you need it.
