I've played the game recently and managed to be able to compete with other players that are already been playing this game a very long time. Since Dota 2 is like Warcraft Mod: Dota, it is easier if you already knew how to play warcraft mod which is dota.

First thing you need to do is to look for a hero that suites your skills. If you are great on supporting heroes, you should be able to assist your team mates by choosing intelligence heroes that offers support skills like enhancement or stunning abilities. You need to keep in mind that Dota is a strategy game, you need to calculate time, and also damage numbers which is very helpful when ganking enemy heroes successfully.



Another thing you need to keep in mind is that in order to successfully build a long run hero is to be patient, don't be too pushy, otherwise you end up loosing the game afterwards (feed enemies always). The key thing also is that you need to carefully choose your hero, heroes in Dota aren't 100 percent balanced, there are limitations of their skill based stats, proper team synergy is extremely important especially if you are playing tournament games.

Choosing hitters or damagers is the best way to start if you aren't familiar with the skills of the heroes and how things works. You can get hitters mostly from agi type heroes as well as str type heroes, there are also int hitters but they are not as many as agi type hitters. Agi type heroes have bonus armors because of their agility which is a armor based stats. Str heroes have higher health compared with other stat type heroes. Int heroes have the best skill based abilities in terms of damage and skill based disable.
